Washington, DC - Tomorrow, Congressmen Brandon Williams (NY-22), Mike Lawler (NY-17), and Chris Pappas (NH-01), will introduce the Bolstering Northeast Heating Oil and Gasoline Reserves Act to require the Department of Energy (DOE) to conduct a long-range strategic review of the Northeast Home Heating Oil Reserve (NEHHOR) and the Northeast Gasoline Supply Reserve (NGSR), and report to Congress on opportunities to strengthen them. The Northeast petroleum product reserves were established as a source to reduce the impact of severe supply disruptions for the region. However current reserves in the Northeast are ill-suited to addressing supply disruptions in the region. This bipartisan legislation would examine the Northeast reserves to understand their current limitations and provide ways of improvement for potential future needs, to ensure that these reserves can provide proper assistance to the Northeast in the event of supply disruptions or emergency energy needs. “It is imperative that our energy needs are being met and will be dependable in the event of an emergency,” said Congressman Williams. “This bipartisan legislation will provide a better understanding of the Northeast petroleum product reserves' capabilities in order to strengthen them. Energy security is vital to making sure our families can stay warm and safe in the winter. That’s why I’m pleased to work on this issue with Congressmen Pappas and Lawler and will continue working to lower the cost of gas, heating oil, and energy for the people of Central New York and the Mohawk Valley.
“Ensuring our nation's energy needs can be met in the case of an emergency is a top priority. The Northeast’s cold winters require oil and gas to keep homes heated and families safe, and it’s vital that our energy supply is properly managed to keep costs low,” said Congressman Pappas. “My bipartisan bill will provide a better understanding of the Northeast petroleum product reserves' capabilities in order to strengthen them and ensure their reliability. I’m glad to be working on this issue in a bipartisan manner alongside Congressmen Williams and Lawler, and I will continue working across the aisle in Congress to lower the cost of gas, heating oil, and energy for Granite Staters.”
“I’m proud to be working in a bipartisan way with Congressman Pappas and Congressman Williams to find long-term solutions to oil and gas shortages in the Northeast,” said Congressman Lawler. “With the recent winter storms hitting New York and the Hudson Valley, it’s abundantly clear that we need to ensure no family goes cold this winter, or in any winters to come. Our bipartisan piece of legislation will work towards preventing that from ever becoming a reality.”
