Rep. Williams Cosponsors Bipartisan Opportunity to Compete Act

“Work is changing fast. Jobs that didn’t even exist ten years ago are now high paying careers. It’s time for hiring practices to catch up. Employers should drop the increasingly outdated Bachelor’s Degree requirement and focus on the skills, experience, and certificates that are relevant today,” said Congressman Brandon Williams. “$100,000+ tuition should not be the cost to enter the workforce.”

WASHINGTON — Congressman Brandon Williams (NY-22) announced his cosponsorship of H.R.5960, the Opportunity to Compete Act. If passed, this bill would amend the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 to ensure that computerized hiring systems, used by companies with more than 500 employees, properly disclose information pertaining to expected experience level and academic qualifications for jobs posted.

Further, if a bachelor’s degree is required for a given position, computerized hiring systems must consider prospective employees who have the required years of experience for a job as having met the degree requirement.
