Liverpool, NY — This week, Congressman Brandon Williams (NY-22), visited Liverpool Middle School where 120 students participated in the inaugural Central New York Micron Chip Camp, which promotes equitable access to STEM education for students. Rep. Williams, while in attendance, answered questions from the students and told stories of his time on a nuclear submarine as an officer in the Navy. “What an honor it was to witness the energy and excitement from young Liverpool Central School District students around STEM education through Micron’s inaugural CNY Chip Camp. Micron is inspiring the next generation of innovators and is preparing the workforce of the future right here in Central New York,” said Congressman Williams. “We’re pleased that Rep. Brandon Williams joined Chip Camp and shared his STEM story and career journey with Central New York students. This is yet another example of the power of academic partners, the private sector and government working together to inspire the next generation of talent to pursue careers in the semiconductor industry. Micron is committed to ensuring equitable access to STEM education so we can build a diverse, highly skilled workforce of the future,” said Robert Simmons, III, Head of Social Impact & STEM Programs, Micron Technology. “The opportunities now available locally to our students through Micron and their community impact programs is exceptional. Certain careers that were once out of reach for many of our students or would require them leaving Central New York, are now possible thanks to legislators like Rep. Brandon Williams who promotes STEM education and federal partnerships with Micron. These students can pursue those careers close to home and make an impact locally,” said Daniel Henner, Liverpool School District Superintendent. “Today’s globally-connected world is increasingly reliant on new and innovative technologies, which is why jobs and careers in technology and advanced manufacturing sectors are growing rapidly. For individuals to benefit from this expansion, and for the United States to remain a technology leader, it is essential that governments, businesses and educational institutions work together to assure broad access to STEM-based learning and training opportunities. Arguably, developing science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills and knowledge has never been more important,” said Dr. Mike Hanyie, Vice Chancellor for Strategic Initiatives and Innovation, Syracuse University.
