Washington, DC — Today, Congressman Brandon Williams (NY-22), voted to pass the TRANQ Act (H.R. 1734), which would require the federal National Institute of Standards and Technology to coordinate its science and research activities regarding illicit drugs containing xylazine, novel synthetic opioids, and other substances of concern.
TRANQ is an acronym for Testing, Rapid Analysis, and Narcotic Quality Research, “Tranq” is also the street name for the animal tranquilizer, xylazine, which is often combined with other drugs like fentanyl or heroin. Rep. Brandon Williams’ office hosted a roundtable recently to listen to and dialogue with local law enforcement, county health officials, and nonprofit organizations on this issue and his plans to co-sponsor the TRANQ Act. “Too many families across Central New York and the Mohawk Valley have been devastated by the illicit drugs flooding into our streets. I am honored to announce the passage of the TRANQ Act, which I co-sponsored, proving that House Republicans and myself are working across the aisle to find common ground,” said Rep. Brandon Williams. “This is not a partisan issue, it is an American issue. I remain steadfast in my pursuit to disrupt, dismantle, and defeat the opioid and overdose crisis that has taken our nation hostage.” |
