Earlier this week, I signed onto a letter authored by Rep. Bill Posey which was sent to the U.S. Trade Representative, ODNI, NIST, the State Department, and the DoD regarding international standards.
In 2021, the NDAA directed NIST to "conduct a study and make recommendations with respect to the effect of the policies of the People's Republic of China and coordination among industrial entities within the People's Republic of China on international bodies engaged in developing and setting international standards for emerging technologies."
This was directed in response to a push by the CCP to exert more leverage on international standards bodies, which have become increasingly relevant for countries seeking to advance the competitiveness of their industry back home. While the study referred to in the NDAA was release in 2022, it remains unclear what recommendations from it are being acted upon or considered by relevant agencies. Rep. Posey's letter asks each recipient to clarify what they are doing in light of the results of this study, so that we can have clarity across the board in our response to this potential threat.
It is imperative that we remain on the same page in our response to the CCP's push to set global standards. We must defend America’s seat at the table from our adversaries as an increasing number of Chinese companies assert their influence on international standards bodies. I commend the initiative of Representative Posey and hope that the agencies addressed in these letters address our inquiries.
